ANKARA, July 29 (Xinhua) -- Five soldiers were killed and eight others wounded by outlawed Kurdish Workers' Party (PKK) militants attacks on a security checkpoint in the southeastern Turkish province of Hakkari, Dogan News Agency reported.
The attacks happened in Cukurca district of Hakkari on Friday evening. The PKK militants attacked the checkpoint with heavy weapons.
Many ambulances, reinforcement troops and Cobra helicopters were sent there after the attack.
Over 500 members of Turkish security forces and thousands of PKK members have been killed in confrontations inside Turkey and in northern Iraq since last July.
More than 40,000 people have lost their lives in clashes with the PKK since 1984, when the group first started anti-government attacks.
The PKK is listed as a terrorist organization by the United States, the European Union and Turkey. Enditem
