SRINAGAR, Indian-controlled Kashmir, Oct. 8 (Xinhua) -- A policeman was killed and two others including a civilian were wounded after militants attacked a police post in restive Indian-controlled Kashmir, police said Saturday.

The attack took place at Reshnagri-Jamnagri in Shopian district, about 62 km south of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

"Last evening two policemen and a member of minority community were wounded after they resisted weapon snatching bid of militants at Jamnagri," a police official posted in Shopian said.

"Of the two wounded policemen, one succumbed on way to hospital."

Reports said militants attacked the police picket guarding the minority Pandit (Hindu) community in Reshnagri-Jamnagri at about 8:45 p.m. local time on Friday.

"To scare the militants and thwart weapon snatching bid, the policemen on duty opened fire, which was retaliated by militants," the police official said. "After the exchange the militants managed to escape."

Soon after the firing incident, contingents of police and paramilitary troopers were rushed to the place to trace attackers. Police have started investigations.

Earlier this week militants stormed a police post guarding members of minority Hindu community at Samboo D H Pora village of Kulgam and snatched five service rifles belonging to policemen. The policemen were left unharmed.

Last month suspected militants barged inside house of a pro-Indian politician in Anantnag and snatched four service rifles from the policemen deployed there.

Local government set up security posts to protect minority families and pro-India politicians in Muslim majority areas of the region, following attacks on them.

So far no militant outfit has claimed responsibility for the weapon snatching.

Militants occasionally target police and paramilitary troopers in Indian-controlled Kashmir.
