SINGAPORE, Oct. 14 (Xinhua) -- Singaporean leaders have conveyed condolences to the Thai Royal Family, government and people over the passing of King Bhumibol Adulyadej, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) said on Friday.
Singapore's President Tony Tan Keng Yam has written to Queen Sirikit and Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn to express sincere condolences, the MFA said in a statement.
President Tan wrote that King Bhumibol was "truly remarkable" and had worked tirelessly for the people of Thailand throughout his long reign. The numerous projects launched by the king brought deep and far-reaching benefits to all corners of Thailand.
"History will remember His Majesty King Bhumibol as a great monarch, and a unifying force deeply loved and respected by the Thai people and the rest of the world," Tan added.
Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has written to his Thai counterpart Prayut Chan-o-cha to convey condolences on behalf of the Singapore government.
Lee said King Bhumibol had "profound compassion for his people, and ceaselessly dedicated himself to improving their well-being." He also lauded the king for playing an important role "in fostering the enduring friendship" between the two countries.
Lee also shared his personal memory with King Bhumibol during the ASEAN Summit in Thailand's Hua Hin in 2009 on his Facebook page.
Lee wrote that the king was a most gracious host and took a close interest in ASEAN programs to promote economic growth and development.
The Thai government declared a public holiday on Friday for people in the kingdom to mourn King Bhumibol, who passed away on Thursday at the age of 88.
