THE HAGUE, Oct. 16 (Xinhua) -- Kenyan Daniel Wanjiru won the 41st edition of the Amsterdam marathon on Sunday, setting a new course record.
The 24-year-old Kenyan decided the race with an acceleration in the Vondelpark and crossed the finish line in the Olympic Stadium in 2:05:19. He was 17 seconds faster than the previous course record set by Kenyan Wilson Chebet in 2013.
Wanjiru's compatriots Sammy Kitwara (2:05:44) and Marius Kimutai (2:05:46) finished second and third respectively. With Laban Korir (2:05:53) and Ezekiel Chebii (2:06:05) the top five of the race were Kenyan.
Meselech Melkamu claimed the victory in the women's race. With a time of 2:23:20 she defeated her compatriot Abebech Afework (2:24:25). Eunice Chumba (Bahrain) came in third in 2:24:59.
