Vietnamese gov't names 6 key hydropower plants

HANOI, Oct. 24 (Xinhua) -- The Vietnamese government has approved a list of major power plants which are of special significance in terms of socioeconomic development, national defense or security, including six hydroelectric plants, the government office announced on Monday.

The six hydropower plants include Son La with capacity of 2,400 MW in northern Son La province, Hoa Binh with capacity of 1,920 MW in northern Hoa Binh province, Lai Chau with capacity of 1,200 MW in northern Lai Chau province, Ialy with capacity of 720 MW in central highlands Gia Lai province, Tri An with capacity of 400 MW in southern Dong Nai province, and Tuyen Quang with capacity of 342 MW in northern Tuyen Quang province.

Becoming operational since December 2012, Son La Hydropower Plant, the biggest of its kind in Southeast Asia, has generated an average output of over 10 billion kW of electricity each year, nearly one-tenth of Vietnam's total electricity output in 2012.

The Prime Minister has assigned the Ministry of Industry and Trade to coordinate with other relevant ministries and sectors to issue special mechanisms in terms of electricity price and management for power plants in the newly-approved list.
