HANOI, Oct. 26 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Myanmar President U Htin Kyaw said Wednesday that his country agreed to consider becoming full member of the Mekong River Commission (MRC).
U Htin Kyaw made the remark while holding talks with Vietnamese counterpart Tran Dai Quang in Vietnam's capital Hanoi during his state visit to Vietnam, reported the state-run news agency VNA.
MRC, established in 1995, groups Cambodia, Laos, Thailand and Vietnam to jointly manage the shared water resources and the sustainable development of the Mekong River, said the commission on its website.
Myanmar and Vietnam pledged to strengthen cooperation in sustainable and effective use of Mekong River water, especially in the framework of the MRC and related organizations.
According to the two leaders, Vietnam and Myanmar are implementing cooperation in 12 prioritized sectors including agriculture, industrial trees, seafood, finance-banking, aviation, telecommunication, oil and gas, mining, production of electric equipments, auto manufacturing and assembly, investment and trade.
For the orientation of relations in the coming time, Vietnam and Myanmar agreed to further ties in all areas such as politics, diplomacy, trade-investment, and defense.
The Myanmar President affirmed that Myanmar government will create conditions for cooperation with Vietnam in banking, aviation, telecommunication, mining and tourism.
Two sides also reached a consensus on soon establishing a defense policy dialogue at deputy defense ministerial level, a working group between foreign affairs departments of two defense ministries, as well as holding the fourth meeting of Security Dialogue in the coming time.
On the same day, U Htin Kyaw paid a courtesy call on General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Nguyen Phu Trong and met with Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc.
U Htin Kyaw is visiting Vietnam from Wednesday to Friday at the invitation of Vietnamese President Tran Dai Quang.
Vietnam and Myanmar established diplomatic ties in 1975.
The bilateral trade revenue reached 299 million U.S. dollars as of July 2016.
