TEHRAN, March 15 (Xinhua) -- Iran's navy warships and a visiting flotilla of warships from the Pakistan navy will hold joint exercises near the Strait of Hormuz, Tasnim news agency reported on Wednesday.
Pakistani flotilla comprising navy ships Tippu Sultan and PNS Jurrat as well as a chopper left the southern Iranian port city of Bandar Abbas for the east of the Strait of Hormuz where the drills will be held, Commander of Iran's First Naval Zone Admiral Hossein Azad said.
The Iranian commander added that Iranian navy's Jamaran destroyer, a missile-launching frigate and a helicopter will join the Pakistani fleet. Azad did not specify when the drills will start.
Some 800 personnel of the Iranian and Pakistani navies will participate in the drills, Azad said, adding that the exercise is aimed at boosting security cooperation between Tehran and Islamabad.
According to Tasnim, the Pakistani flotilla berthed at Bandar Abbas on Sunday and was officially received by the Iranian Navy's officers.
