Former EU chief, Portuguese PM Barroso appointed Goldman Sachs advisor

LISBON, July 8 (Xinhua) -- Jose Manuel Barroso, a former European Commission chief, was appointed by Goldman Sachs as an advisor on Friday, making front page news here.

Barroso, who was president of the European Commission from 2004 to 2014 and also prime minister of Portugal from 2002 to 2004, will play an important role in the bank after the UK's decision to leave the European Union (EU), the multinational banking firm said.

"His perspective, judgment, and counsel will add great value to our GSI Board of Directors, Goldman Sachs, our shareholders and our people," Goldman Sachs said in an official statement on Friday.

According to local daily Expresso, "the appointment comes after the former prime minister announced, in a joint interview with SIC and Expresso carried out at the start of May, that he was going to abandon politics and start to work in the private sector."

Barroso has been awarded numerous honorary degrees and was elected to Portugal's parliament for the first time in 1985. He carried out several roles including state secretary for foreign affairs and cooperation. Enditem
