ISLAMABAD, July 9 (Xinhua) -- Pakistan's most respected philanthropist, Abdul Sattar Edhi, has passed away at the age of 92 at a hospital in Karachi, his son, Faisal Edhi, said early Saturday.
Faisal said his father was put on a ventilator after his health deteriorated during dialysis Friday morning.
His funeral will be held Saturday afternoon, his son said.
Edhi was heading a foundation which supported thousands of needy people and children. He was conferred several highest national civilian awards due to his services for humanity.
President Mamnoon Hussain, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, army chief General Raheel Sharif and political leaders issued condolences messages shortly after the death was formally confirmed.
The Edhi Foundation is one of Pakistan's largest public welfare organisations and runs one of the biggest fleets of ambulances, and dozens of clinics and orphanages in the country.
