BEIJING, March 22 (Xinhua) -- When it comes to Middle East affairs, China has never been a mere onlooker and has always contributed actively to peace and stability in the region, a Foreign Ministry spokesperson said Wednesday.
Spokesperson Hua Chunying made the remarks at a daily press briefing Wednesday in response to a question on why China is actively involved in Middle East affairs.
China has always adhered to an objective and fair position, Hua said, adding that China has played a constructive role in promoting a political solution to the Palestine-Israel issue, Iran nuclear issue and Syrian issue.
Saudi Arabian King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu both visited China recently. During the visits, both countries reached important consensus with China on deepening pragmatic cooperation in various domains and the results were fruitful, Hua said.
China hopes to boost the Belt and Road Initiative with countries along the routes, including Middle Eastern countries, she said.
