NEW DELHI, March 23 (Xinhua) -- Militants Thursday fired upon police vehicles in restive Indian-controlled Kashmir and triggered a gunfight, officials said.
The attack was carried out in morning at village Kundalan-Hajipora of the Shopian district, about 58 km south of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.
"Today morning militants fired upon police vehicles here using automatic weapons," a senior police official told Xinhua. "The militants fired from an orchard, which was duly retaliated but in ensuing exchange of fire, no one was injured or killed on either side."
According to police, the vehicles were on a routine patrol in the area.
Reports said militants managed to escape from the spot after a brief exchange of fire between the two sides.
Following the attack huge contingents of army and police were rushed to the area to conduct searches. However, there were no reports of arrests or further exchanges of fire from the village.
So far no militant outfit has claimed responsibility for the attack.
Last week three militants belonging to Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) outfit and a girl were killed, while a policeman and a boy were wounded in a gunfight in the region.
Kashmir, the Himalayan region divided between India and Pakistan, is claimed by both in full. Since their independence from Britain, the two countries have fought three wars, two exclusively over Kashmir.
