BEIJING, Sept. 20 (Xinhua) -- As China has embarked on a decisive stage of building a moderately prosperous society in all respects, a safe and stable social environment is needed to ensure the goal is completed on schedule.
However, this is not an easy path as the country's reform has entered a phase that touches on difficult issues and results in more complex conflicts and looming risks.
The situation requires greater efforts in public security, as well as better social governance.
When meeting representatives from the comprehensive management of public security sector on Tuesday, President Xi Jinping asked for increased efforts to improve social governance featuring socialism with Chinese characteristics to ensure that people lead prosperous lives, society remains orderly and the country enjoys long-term peace and stability.
Xi stressed that development and stability are the absolute principles, and should both be dealt with by strong hands. Xi also noted the importance of preventing and controlling major risks through the leadership of the Communist Party of China (CPC).
Better social governance will resolve various social problems, according to the president.
Over the last five years, various documents and policies have been issued regarding public security and social governance.
The responsibilities of leading officials in overseeing related work have been clearly defined and better use has been made of modern technologies.
Members of the public have been mobilized in the cause, in coordination with authorities, markedly extending the reach and improving the efficiency of social governance.
The efforts have paid off.
Since its launch in 2016, a system called "Tuanyuan," or reunion, a platform which has shared information about 1,317 missing children, has helped Chinese police find 1,274 missing children.
A project to build a police information network by sharing public security videos has greatly raised the rate of discovered criminal cases.
Surveys showed that the public sense of security has improved in the past few years, with the public satisfaction index rising from 87.55 percent in 2012 to 91.99 percent in 2016.
During Tuesday's event, Xi told the representatives to make social governance more systematic, rational, intelligent and in accordance with rule of law.
What is of fundamental importance is maintaining the authority and unified leadership of the CPC Central Committee, as social governance matters not only the people's livelihoods but also the long-lasting prosperity and stability of the country.
Only by adhering to the CPC leadership could this work be done in a coordinated and comprehensive manner.
By this means, the leadership of the Party and the advantages of socialist system will be converted into advantages of social governance to serve the overall development of the country and society.
