LONDON, Feb. 2 (Xinhua) -- Anti-terror measures are to be installed around Britain's world-famous Eton College to prevent terror attacks on what is a key tourism hotspot, it was confirmed Friday.
The decision to install a ring of 38-bollards, capable of withstanding vehicle attacks, follows an assessment by the South-East Terrorism Unit which identified the college's historic Memorial Buildings as a natural place for people to congregate.
Existing bollards in the area will be replaced by fixed bollards designed to prevent vehicle attacks such as those carried out last year in London.
The new bollards are to have a Victorian style to reflect the historic surroundings of the buildings in what is a protected conservation area around the college, a report by the urban development management panel at the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead said.
The college is close to Windsor where intensive security is being stepped up ahead of the Royal wedding at Windsor Castle on May 19 of Queen Elizabeth's grandson Prince Harry to American actress Meghan Markle.
The exclusive college, where 19 British prime ministers have been educated, is one of four remaining schools in Britain where all students live in as boarders. The college was founded in 1440 by King Henry VI.
Although the majority of the students are charged around 57,000 U.S. dollars a year to study at Eton, hundreds of boys are given large bursaries or scholarships, with dozens admitted for free as a way of opening the doors of the college to a bigger cross-section of society.
