TOKYO, March 2 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks closed sharply lower Friday, with the benchmark Nikkei stock index closing at a two-week low after U.S President Donald Trump's tariff policy on steel and aluminum imports triggered a global sell-off.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average lost 542.83 points, or 2.50 percent, from Thursday to close the day at 21,181.64.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, dropped 31.86 points, or 1.83 percent, to finish at 1,708.34.

On the main section all industry categories retreated, with iron and steel, precision instrument and rubber product-linked issues comprising those that declined the most by the close of play.
