MAIMANA, Afghanistan, March 8 (Xinhua) -- At least five armed insurgents have been killed and six others wounded in an airstrike conducted by Afghan air force in Faryab province, north of Afghanistan on Wednesday night, an army source said Thursday.
"Afghan National Army (ANA) Air Force targeted hideout of militants in Pashton Kot district, Faryab province, killing five militants and injuring six others last night," Ghulam Hazrat Karimi, a press officer of army's Division 20 Pamir based in the northern region, told Xinhua.
The targeted hideout and a nearby bunker were also destroyed by the strike, he noted.
Fighting has escalated in Afghanistan as the Taliban insurgency spreads from its traditional strongholds in the south and east to the once peaceful region in the north, where Taliban have been recruiting from among the youth.
The Taliban militants fighting government security forces have not made comments about the report so far.
