Nepal willing to work with China in women rights: minister

KATHMANDU, March 8 (Xinhua) -- Nepal cannot prosper until women are ensured with full political, economic and social rights, and the country is willing to work with China in the field of women movement and rights, a government minister said here on Thursday.

Newly-appointed Minister for Women, Children and Social Welfare Tham Maya Thapa made the remarks at the International Women's Day reception organized by the Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu.

"Nepali women seek cooperation and exchange programs with China to attain economic, social, cultural and political rights. Nepali government wants to work together with Chinese government to achieve the goals and reach a new height," the minister said.

Congratulating the newly elected female politicians in the recent three-tier elections, Chinese ambassador to Nepal Yu Hong said that China will work continuously for women's development.

The ambassador said that the Chinese government attaches great importance to upholding women's rights and interests, keeping gender equity as a fundamental task.

As part of 100 health projects for other countries, China has been assisting Nepal in health projects for women and children, especially in rural areas.

The reception was attended by nearly 200 Nepali women guests, including leaders from various political parties, diplomats, business leaders, social activists and journalists.
