MOMBASA, Kenya, March 11 (Xinhua) -- At least six people including five children died after they fell into a pit latrine in the coastal Kenyan city of Mombasa, the police said Sunday.

Local Police Commander Christopher Rotich said the incident happened during a wedding ceremony on Saturday evening.

According to the police, one survived the fall and is receiving treatment in hospital. At least eight people escaped unhurt.

"They were on top of the pit taking photos of the couple before the concrete disintegrated, the concrete slab that covered the septic tank couldn't bear the weight of people," Rotich said.

The police are working with structural engineers to assess the scene to determine the exact cause of the fall.

Last year, four children died in a similar way in the same area following heavy rains.
