RABAT, March 14 (Xinhua) -- Morocco intends to host the 2021 annual meetings of the World Bank (WB) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the Moroccan Economy Minister Mohamed Boussaid said on Wednesday.
In a statement published by official MAP news agency, Boussaid said that these prestigious meetings have not been organized in the African continent for more than 40 years, stressing that it is time for Africa to have the honor of hosting them.
Morocco has all the assets and guarantees to host such a huge event, he said, referring notably to the country's stability, economic performance, important infrastructure and the important know-how it has developed by organizing major international events such as Climate Change Conference in 2016.
According to MAP, Boussaid is leading a Moroccan delegation since Tuesday in a visit to WB and IMF headquarters in Washington to promote Morocco's candidacy to host the meetings.
This visit features a series of meetings between the Moroccan delegation and senior officials from the two international institutions.
Each autumn, the Boards of Governors of the World Bank Group and the International Monetary Fund hold meetings to discuss a range of issues related to poverty reduction, international economic development and finance.
The annual meetings are traditionally held in Washington two years out of three and, in order to reflect the international character of the two institutions, every third year in a different member country.
