S. Africa demands retraction from Australia on remarks over land appropriation

JOHANNEASBURG, March 15 (Xinhua) -- South Africa's Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Lindiwe Sisulu on Thursday met the Australian High Commissioner to South Africa, Adam McCarthy to demand a retraction of remarks made by his government official over land appropriation.

Australia's home affairs minister, Peter Dutton who was quoted saying South African farmers deserve special attention from his government because of South Africa's horrific circumstances of land redistribution.

"It was communicated to the High Commissioner that the South African government is offended by the statements which have been attributed to the Australian Home Affairs Minister and a full retraction is expected," said the Department of International Relations and Cooperation in a statement.

South Africa have initiated a process to amend the Constitution to pave way for the appropriation of the land without compensation.

The South African government has emphasized that the land appropriation would be done within the confines of the law and not disturb the country's economic performance.

The Department of International Relations and Cooperation's added, "The High Commissioner who was accompanied by his deputy High Commissioner undertook to immediately communicate with the Australian government to convey the message from the minister and South African government."
