ISLAMABAD, April 2 (Xinhua) -- Pakistani Army Chief Gen. Qamar Javed Bajwa on Monday confirmed death sentences to 10 hardcore terrorists for their involvement in heinous offences related to terrorism, the military said.

An army statement said the convicts were behind the killing of innocent civilians, attacking Law Enforcement Agencies and Armed Forces of Pakistan.

"Today Chief of Army Staff confirmed death sentences awarded to 10 hardcore terrorists, who were involved in heinous offences related to terrorism, including killing of innocent civilians and attacking Pearl Continental Hotel Peshawar as well as Law Enforcement Agencies and Armed Forces of Pakistan," a statement from the army's media wing Inter-Services Public Relations said.

Five other convicts have also been awarded imprisonment, according to the statement.

These convicts were tried by special military courts. Arms and explosives were recovered from the possession of the convicts, who had confessed their offence before the Judicial Magistrate and the trial court. The convicts were members of proscribed organizations.

"On the whole, they were involved in killing of 62 persons including five civilians, 11 police officials and 46 Frontier Constabulary and Armed Forces Personnel," the statement further said.

The convicts include terrorists who killed Amjad Farid Sabri, a famous singer who was gunned down near his house in the port city of Karachi in June 2016.

The army courts were set up after the terrorist attack on an army school in December 2014 for the speedy trial of terrorism suspects.
