KIEV, April 20 (Xinhua) -- The frontline town of Avdiivka in eastern Ukraine is facing a water crisis, authorities said on Friday.
The town lies close to the "contact line" that divides the territory controlled by pro-independence rebels from the rest of the country.
The Ukrainian Ministry for Temporarily Occupied Territories and Internally Displaced Persons said on Twitter that water supplies to Avdiivka have been completely suspended after a filtration station was shelled.
Government-controlled Avdiivka, 20 km north of the rebel stronghold of Donetsk, can now provide water to about 20,000 local residents for only four days, the ministry said.
The ministry has called on international organizations to hold an emergency meeting so that the Donetsk filtration station can resume operation.
The station was shelled on Tuesday, leaving five employees wounded and power lines damaged.
The four-year conflict between the government and rebels in eastern Ukraine has claimed the lives of more than 10,000 people and left thousands of infrastructure facilities destroyed or damaged.
