SOFIA, April 23 (Xinhua) -- Bulgaria's general government institutional sector reported in 2017 a surplus of 920 million BGN (579 million U.S. dollars) or 0.9 percent of the gross domestic product (GDP), officials said Monday.
According to preliminary data of the country's National Statistical Institute (NSI), the central government and the local government sub-sectors saw surpluses of 727 million BGN and 256 million BGN.
Meanwhile, the sub-sector social security funds reported a deficit of 63 million BGN, the NSI said.
The government debt of Bulgaria for 2017 was 25.4 percent of GDP, it added.
The general government institutional sector reported a surplus of 0.2 percent in 2016 and 1.6 percent and 5.5 percent deficits in 2015 and 2014, while the government debt stood at 29 percent, 26 percent and 27 percent of GDP respectively. (1 U.S. dollar = 1.59 BGN)
