MADRID, April 24 (Xinhua) -- A 24-year-old Moroccan man was arrested Tuesday by the Spanish Civil Guard in the Basque Region of northern Spain for spreading jihadist propaganda and attempting to recruit people to fight for the Islamic State (DAESH), the Spanish Interior Ministry confirms.
The man, who is confirmed to have been born in the Morocco town of Alhucemas, was arrested in the town of Andoain with the Civil Guard searching his residence "in order to recover all of the evidence of his intense activity in internet and social networks."
The ministry says the suspect had "access to abundant audio-visual material from Syria and Iraq" and used several profiles he had created on social network sites to "maintain a multitude of contacts with individuals both inside and outside of Spain."
He used the contacts to spread jihadist propaganda and had also planned to travel to the conflict zones of Iraq and Syria to fight for DAESH himself.
This arrest follows a police operation in the city of Malaga (southern Spain) on Monday which led to the detention of a 35-year-old Moroccan accused of sending money to his wife to allow her to travel to Syria and link up with DAESH. Police report the woman is considered to be one of the "most wanted and dangerous terrorists in Europe."
A total of 280 suspected Jihadists have now been arrested in Spain since the start of 2015.
