DOHA, May 17 (Xinhua) -- Qatar's Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani will attend the extraordinary summit of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) on Palestine to be held in the Turkish city Istanbul on Friday, local media reported Thursday.
During a telephone conversation, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who currently holds OIC's rotating chairmanship, invited the emir to attend the extraordinary OIC summit, the Qatari newspaper The Peninsula reported.
On May 15, Turkey called for holding an extraordinary OIC summit on May 18 to discuss "the latest serious developments in the State of Palestine," following the recent bloody conflicts between Israel and Palestinian protesters near the Israeli border with the Gaza Strip.
At least 63 Palestinians have been killed and 2,800 others wounded in the past days of clashes as Palestinians protested against the U.S. opening of its embassy on Monday in the disputed city of Jerusalem, which the Palestinians want its eastern part as the capital of their future state.
Both Qatar and Turkey have strongly condemned the U.S. for opening the embassy in Jerusalem and Israel 's killing of unarmed Palestinian protesters.
Turkey has been among the most vocal critics of Israel during the recent Israeli-Palestinian clashes, leading to the worst diplomatic crisis since 2010, with each other expelling diplomats on Tuesday.
