KIEV, May 18 (Xinhua) -- At least two civilians were killed and two others wounded early Friday during a shelling in the village of Troitske in Ukraine's conflict-hit eastern Lugansk region, authorities said.

Yuriy Garbuz, head of the Lugansk regional military-civilian administration, said on Facebook that Troitske was attacked by 122-millimeter-caliber artillery shortly after midnight, with at least 15 shells landing in the village.

He said one rocket shell hit a private residence, killing a 13-year-old teenager and his father on the spot. His mother and elder brother were wounded and hospitalized.

The incident was among the worst civilian casualties in the conflict in eastern Ukraine in recent months.

According to the latest United Nations estimates, over 2,500 civilians, including more than 100 children, were killed, and about 9,000 others injured in eastern Ukraine since the start of the violence in April 2014.

Troitske village, which lies near the contact line of fighting in eastern Ukraine, is controlled by Ukrainian government troops.
