KHARTOUM, May 20 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations African Union Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) on Sunday expressed concern over recent clashes between Sudan government troops and forces of Sudan Liberation Army (SLA)/Abdul Wahid Nur faction in Central Darfur.
The UNAMID Joint Special Representative Jeremiah Mamabolo "expressed concern," and urged both sides to "exercise restraint and consider the impact of renewed fighting on vulnerable civilians," said UNAMID in a statement.
It appealed to all parties involved to resolve outstanding issues through dialogue and the peace process, saying a political solution is the best way forward to satisfy the interests of the people of Darfur.
"We particularly regret the new displacements and the burning of villages such as Gobbo, Kawara, Kimingtong in South Darfur as well as other villages in the Rokero locality in Central Darfur," Mamabolo added.
In this regard, Mamabolo commended the UN Country Team for swiftly responding to and assisting those affected by the ensuing humanitarian situation.
Press reports on Saturday said at least 15,000 citizens in Jebel Marra fled their areas in fear of expected clashes between the government troops and forces of SLA/Abdul Wahid Nur.
