JOHANNESBURG, May 23 (Xinhua) -- South African police said Wednesday they had arrested eight security guards and seized firearms after four taxi drivers were shot dead in taxi wars in Johannesburg.
This followed a conflict over taxi routes between taxi drivers and taxi association executives. The police said they suspect the taxi drivers who had come to have a meeting with taxi association executives were shot by the security guards hired by the association.
Gauteng police spokesperson Captain Mavela Masondo said four were fatally shot and six others wounded and that cases of murder and attempted murder are being investigated.
At the end of April, South African police arrested 16 people for shooting people in taxi wars in Durban.
