KABUL, May 26 (Xinhua) -- The registration of candidates for Afghanistan's third parliamentary elections in the post-Taliban country began on Saturday, the Afghan Independent Elections Commission (IEC) announced.
"The three-week candidate nomination period for Walesi Jirga or the lower house of the parliament and districts council begins on May 26 and will be over on June 12," the IEC chief Gulajan Abdulbadi Sayyad told reporters at a press briefing here in Kabul.
Afghan parliamentary elections scheduled for Oct. 20 and the voters' registration process started on April 14 and supposed to be end on June 12, according to IEC statement.
As of May 26, more than 3 million of some 12 million eligible voters have registered for the polls amid security fears and militants' intimidation, according to the latest figures released by the election body.
The first parliamentary election in the post-Taliban Afghanistan was held in 2005 while the second parliamentary polls took place in 2010.
