KABUL, May 30 (Xinhua) -- A district police chief and four assailants were killed and 12 people wounded following a car-bomb attack and ensuing gunfight on a police station in Afghanistan's eastern Logar province on Wednesday, an Interior Ministry spokesman said.

The incident took place at around 4:50 a.m. (local time) Wednesday, after one of the assailants blew up his explosive-packed car at the entrance gate of the Police District 1 in provincial capital Pul-e-Alam city, with the remaining three militants entering the compound that resulted in the killing of the district police chief and all four assailants, during the ten minute-long fierce clash, spokesman Najib Danish told local Tolo News TV.

The injured included eight civilians and four police officers in the latest Taliban militants attack on government interest. Among those injured was one woman.

The blast also damaged several nearby buildings and shops. Security forces have cordoned off the area for precautionary measures.

Taliban militants have intensified armed attacks against security forces across the country since April 25 when the Taliban's so-called yearly rebel offensive started.
