Nigerian president declares June 12 democracy day

LAGOS, June 6 (Xinhua) -- Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari Wednesday announced June 12 as the new date which Democracy Day will be celebrated in the country.

The Nigerian leader made the announcement in a statement.

Buhari said June 12, 1993, election was the freest, fairest and most peaceful election since Nigeria's Independence.

The commemoration and investiture, the president added, will take place on Tuesday, June 12, 2018, a date which in future years will replace May 29 as a National Public holiday in the celebration of Nigeria's Democracy Day.

Abiola, the presumed winner of the annulled June 12, 1993 presidential election, died a apparently of a heart attack at a meeting with government officials and a high-level United States delegation to discuss issues on his release from four years of detention.
