ADDIS ABABA, June 11 (Xinhua) -- The Ethiopia Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) said Monday that 32 Ethiopians jailed in Egyptian prisons have returned home.
In a press statement, the Office of Spokesperson of MoFA said the Ethiopian prisoners were released following a two-day visit of Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed to Egypt over the weekend.
MoFA did not disclose the crimes the 32 Ethiopians were jailed for or for how long they had been in Egyptian prisons.
It is estimated that every year thousands of Ethiopians use Egypt as a transit point to smuggle themselves to European destinations by crossing the Mediterranean Sea. An unknown number of Ethiopians are also thought to use Egypt's Sinai desert annually as a transit point to reach Israel.
