MOSCOW, June 18 (Xinhua) -- Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Monday discussed the schedule of political contacts between Moscow and Washington, the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

In a telephone conversation at the U.S. initiative, Lavrov and Pompeo discussed relations between Russia and the United States, including the schedule of political contacts between the two countries in the near future, the ministry said in a statement.

They also touched upon issues regarding the Syrian settlement on the basis of the United Nations Security Council Resolution 2254 and tasks of pooling efforts to address the issues of the Korean Peninsula, according to the statement.

U.S. President Donald Trump said on Friday that it was "possible" he could meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin this summer.

Echoing his remarks, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said later on the day that Russia does not rule out the possibility of the two leaders meeting this summer, according to Russian media.

Relations between Washington and Moscow deteriorated in the past year over alleged Russian involvement in the 2016 U.S. presidential campaign.
