NEW DELHI, June 20 (Xinhua) -- India's Chief Economic Advisor Arvind Subramanian Wednesday said he was quitting his job.
"My departure is entirely for personal reasons," Subramanian told media during a press conference.
Ahead of his public announcement, Indian Finance Minister Arun Jaitley in a post on social media informed that Subramanian was going back to the United States.
"Few days ago chief economic advisor Arvind Subramanian met me over video conferencing. He informed me that he would like to go back to the US on account of pressing family commitments. His reasons were personal but extremely important for him. He left me with no option but to agree with him," Jaitley writes.
Fifty-nine-year-old Subramanian, a senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics, became India's chief economic adviser in 2014 for a period of three years, which was later extended.
