JAKARTA, June 25 (Xinhua) -- Three civilians were killed in a shooting attack targeting a small plane at an airport in Indonesia's Nduga in the easternmost province of Papua on Monday, Papua provincial Police Headquarters confirmed.
The headquarters spokesperson AM Kamal said the shooting against the plane at Kenyam airport took place in the morning, killing three people on the scene and injuring two plane crews, including the pilot.
He said the plane was shot after it landed at Kenyam airport.
Kamal said the bodies of those killed have been transferred to Kenyam police station and the injured were treated in Kenyam public health center.
He said that efforts are underway to pursue the perpetrators.
The Twin Otter plane operated by domestic airlines Trigana transported police personnel tasked to ensure the security during the upcoming regional election in the regency slated for Wednesday.
Papua province has been facing mounting threat of violence carried out by militants of separatist groups demanding for independence in Indonesia's easternmost mineral-rich province.
