SYDNEY, June 30 (Xinhua) -- A driver was seriously injured in a road accident that hurled a kangaroo into the windscreen of his vehicle near Lithgow city in Australia's New South Wales state, police said on Saturday.
The case involved a sedan hitting a kangaroo on a road late on Friday and launching the marsupial into the windscreen of a utility vehicle traveling on the other side, causing the driver to lose control and hit the guard rails, police said in a statement.
The 32-year-old man suffered serious head and facial injuries and was airlifted to hospital, where he remains in critical condition. The 19-year-old man driving the sedan and two female passengers were not injured. Police are investigating the case.
Friday's crash is the latest to involve driving injuries and kangaroo roadkill, with state ambulance services reporting more than 80 such cases so far this year and the number set to jump during the current winter, as the shorter days in the Southern Hemisphere will see the animals, which are more active during sunrise and sunset, on the move during peak traffic periods, according to local media.
