MEXICO CITY, June 30 (Xinhua) -- The Mexican army arrested a suspected criminal leader and fugitive in the northeastern state of Tamaulipas on Saturday, said the local government.

Luis Miguel Gonzalez, a fugitive from justice in both the United States and Mexico, was listed as one of the top 10 most-wanted criminals by agencies in both countries for gang leadership on the Tamaulipas-Texas border.

The Tamaulipas Coordination Group, which brings together federal and state agencies, confirmed the capture of the alleged criminal leader by the Mexican army, adding that he was one of the "cross-border priority objectives" of the binational "Security and Prosperity Campaign."

According to local press, Gonzalez was arrested at the border town of Reynosa, one of the towns most affected by the ongoing conflict between the Gulf Cartel and Los Zetas. The two factions have been in a bloody conflict over the control of drug trafficking for several years.

Authorities identified Gonzalez as the leader of the Gulf Cartel in Reynosa and attributed several acts of violence in the city of Hidalgo, Texas to the cartel.

The "Security and Prosperity Campaign" was launched on June 7 to facilitate the search for suspected criminal leaders who are already facing criminal charges either in the United States or in Mexico. The criminal charges are serious, including homicide, drug trafficking, money laundering and kidnapping.
