MEXICO CITY, July 1 (Xinhua) -- Mexico's leading presidential candidate Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador pledged Sunday to focus on fighting corruption that breeds poverty and inequality.
"Eradicating corruption and impunity will be the main task of our government," Lopez Orbrador said in his victory speech to his supporters.
He also promised that his political allies, close friends and family members would be held accountable as well.
The speech came after the National Electoral Institute announced the results of a preliminary unofficial "rapid count" based on a sample of 5 percent of polling stations nationwide.
According to the figures, Lopez Obrador, candidate of the left-of-center National Regeneration Movement, won a decisive victory by securing 53 to 53.8 percent of the votes.
Conservative candidate Ricardo Anaya won 22.1 to 22.8 percent of the votes, ruling party candidate Jose Antonio Meade 15.7 to 16.3 percent, and independent candidate Jaime Rodriguez 5.3 to 5.5 percent.
Lopez Obrador promised to lead a "fiscally responsible" public administration that would respect the independence of the Central Bank.
He said his government will invest in infrastructure projects as a means to spur job creation, and there will be no need to raise taxes.
He also called for national reconciliation and for putting differences aside because "the country comes first."
Some 62.9 to 63.8 percent of the nearly 90 million registered voters turned out on Sunday to elect a new president, as well as a new head of Mexico City's government, eight governors, and national and local lawmakers.
