NEW DELHI, July 2 (Xinhua) -- Eleven members of an extended family in India were found dead in their home, 10 of them hanging from the ceiling, local media reported.
A 77-year-old woman, who was the oldest member of the family, was the only one found lying on the floor, with signs of strangulation.
The others were hanging from the ceiling, most of them gagged and blindfolded, with their hands tied, the Times of India reported.
The family had lived in the house for over two decades, the Hindustan Times newspaper reported.
A neighbor who had visited the house Sunday called the police after witnessing the horrifying scene.
Police said some handwritten notes found in the house pointed to "definite spiritual and mystical practices."
The notes included some detailed instructions for "mass salvation," such as how hangings should be conducted.
However, the AFP reported that police said investigation was going on and they hadn't ruled out anything.
