ACCRA, July 5 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations envoy in Ghana on Thursday commended Ghanaian President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for his commitment to an inclusive approach to the timely appointment of top officials of the Electoral Commission of Ghana.
UN Resident Coordinator Christine Evans-Klock said in a statement that her organization recognized as good practice the procedure for nominating and appointing members of Ghana's EC was representative and inclusive of the views of different political parties and sectors of civil society.
Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo last Thursday removed the chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Charlotte Osei, from office with immediate effect. Her two deputies, Amadu Sulley and Georgina Opoku Amankwah, were also removed from office.
This was after a five-member committee set up by Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo to investigate separate complaints brought against the three top EC officials by Ghanaian citizens had recommended their removal from office.
The committee recommended their removal on the basis of stated misbehavior and incompetence.
According to Evans-Klock, the UN welcomes the recent comments by the Ghanaian president.
"We are not looking for persons who are coming to do a job for the NDC or for the NPP. We are looking for persons who are coming to do a job for Ghana. That is what we are looking for, for the Electoral Commission," said the statement.
She added that, as a longstanding provider of development assistance to the national electoral process, the UN would continue to support efforts to improve general management of elections in Ghana.
