PUTRAJAYA, Malaysia, July 11 (Xinhua) -- Malaysia will impose taxi rules on ride-hailing services such as Grab, in a bid to create a level playing field, said Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook on Wednesday.

Loke told a press conference that starting from Thursday, ride-hailing drivers will be subjected to the same licensing conditions as taxi drivers in Malaysia.

The slew of regulations include regular car inspections and driver's card registration.

The minister has also set a maximum commission rate of 10 percent on ride-hailing taxi services and a 20 percent on private car services.

The maximum surcharge is set at two times of the fares, he said.

The ministry is also studying whether Grab's takeover of Uber's Southeast Asian business represents anti-trust violations, said Loke. The move may deal a further blow to Grab, after Singaporean authorities last week threatened to unwind Grab's buyout of Uber.
