5 killed in truck-car collision in northern India

NEW DELHI, July 12 (Xinhua) -- At least five people have been killed in a collision between a car and a truck in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, police said Thursday.

The accident occurred on Faizabad-Rebareli National Highway in the state's Amethi district.

"The victims were travelling by car that was hit by the truck late Wednesday evening. While two people were killed on the spot, three others died at a hospital," a police official said.

A probe has been ordered into the incident, he said. "A case of rash and negligent driving has been registered against the truck driver and a manhunt launched to nab him," the official added.

Road accidents occur in India mostly due to poor driving or badly maintained roads and vehicles.
