MEXICO CITY, July 13 (Xinhua) -- Roberto Gonzalez Hinojosa, the mayor-elect of Mier City in the northeastern Mexican state of Tamaulipas, was found alive Friday after being kidnapped the day before by an armed group, according to state authorities.

The spokesman for Tamaulipas security authorities Luis Alberto Rodriguez told the press that the mayor, who was re-elected this month, "is in good condition."

The spokesman said an unknown group intercepted Hinojosa as he left city hall on Thursday.

Hours later, government officials in Nuevo Leon confirmed that they had found the mayor-elect, who had driven his own vehicle to the municipality of General Trevino.

The motive for the kidnapping is unknown.

Tamaulipas has been one of the hardest hit states by violent confrontations between organized crime and state and federal law enforcement.

Since the beginning of the election season in September 2017, more than 150 politicians, among them mayors and candidates for this month's elections, have been assassinated, according to a report by the Mexican risk analysis consulting firm Etellekt.

General elections were held in Mexico on July 1.
