WASHINGTON, July 14 (Xinhua) -- A suspect in the shooting of three police officers in Kansas City, U.S. state of Missouri, was shot and killed Sunday afternoon, authorities said.

Two undercover and tactical officers encountered the suspect at around 12:15 p.m. Sunday when conducting an investigation at a local motel, according to a series of tweets by the Kansas City Police.

The suspect fired on the two officers with a rifle before fleeing the scene in a vehicle and shooting a third officer in the arm from a barricaded house during a standoff, police said.

At approximately 1:15 p.m., the armed suspect exited the residence and exchanged gunfire with officers before being shot and declared dead.

All three officers who were shot are in stable condition and expected to live.

Missouri Governor Mike Parson tweeted that "thoughts and prayers are with the members" of the Kansas City Police and their families.

Local reports said the suspect was under surveillance as a person of interest in the shooting death of a 25-year-old University of Missouri-Kansas City from India earlier this month.
