LOS ANGELES, July 18 (Xinhua) -- The California Supreme Court on Wednesday ordered a proposal to split California into three states be removed from appearing on the November ballot.
The proposal had gained enough signitures in June to qualify for the ballot in 2018 California elections while "significant questions have been raised regarding the proposition's validity," according to the court.
According to the proposal, led by venture capitalist Tim Draper, the country's most populous state will be split into three new states, namely Northern California, California and Southern California, with San Francisco, Los Angeles, and San Diego in different states.
"The citizens of the whole (California) state would be better served by three smaller state governments while preserving the historical boundaries of the various counties, cities, and towns," Draper said when he submitted the initiative last September.
Draper made a similar attempt to divide California into six states in 2014 and failed to gather enough signatures then.
