Death toll from central Mexico freeway crash rises to 13

MEXICO CITY, July 20 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from Friday's head-on crash between a public transport bus and a cargo truck in the central State of Mexico has risen to 13 after a woman died of her injuries in hospital, authorities announced.

According to official reports, the crash occurred at 5:45 a.m. local time (1045 GMT) in the municipality of Ecatepec on a road connecting Mexico City and Pachuca, the capital of Hidalgo state, to the northeast of Mexico City.

Authorities said 12 people were killed at the scene, including two women and 10 men, and at least eight others were sent to hospital.

Governor of the State of Mexico Alfredo del Mazo expressed his condolences to the victims' families on Twitter.

The bus was travelling towards Mexico City and "apparently speeding" along the edge of the freeway when it hit a broken-down truck, according to a state government report.

The local government said relatives of the victims were being supported by psychologists and legal advisors, while social workers visited the injured in hospital.

More investigation into the cause of the accident is still underway.
