22 killed, 12 missing in Vietnam's floods

HANOI, July 23 (Xinhua) -- Heavy rain, flash floods and landslides triggered by Typhoon Son Tinh have left 22 people dead, 12 missing and 26 injured in Vietnam's central and northern regions, the Central Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control said on Monday morning.

Among 22 deaths, 11 were from northern Yen Bai province, four from northern Son La province, three from northern Phu Tho province, two from central Thanh Hoa province, and one from northern Phu Tho and Hoa Binh provinces each.

Among 12 people listed as missing, six were from Yen Bai, three from Thanh Hoa, two from Son La and one from Phu Tho.

The natural disasters also destroyed 231 houses and inundated roughly 5,900 houses, killed nearly 6,500 cattle and more than 106,000 poultry, damaged nearly 5,700 hectares of aquaculture ponds, and inundated 115,000 hectares of rice and other crops in the two regions.

According to Vietnam's National Center for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting, landslides may occur in the five northern provinces of Lai Chau, Dien Bien, Son La, Lao Cai and Yen Bai.
