LUSAKA, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) -- Nine people died while seven others were injured when a vehicle they were traveling in collided head-on with another vehicle in Zambia's Chongwe district.
The accident, which happened on Sunday afternoon, killed four people on the spot while the other five died at a local hospital, said police spokesperson Esther Mwaata-Katongo on Monday.
She said the accident occurred when the driver of a Toyota Hiace hit into an oncoming truck after overtaking improperly.
Road traffic accidents are common on Zambian roads.
Last week, the country's Road Transport and Safety Agency said over 1,800 lives are lost and many more injured annually on the country's roads mainly due to over-speeding.
The agency has since decided to start enforcing measures such as using roadside cameras on major highways in order to reduce the carnages on the roads.
