UNITED NATIONS, Aug. 24 (Xinhua) -- The UN Security Council on Friday condemned "in the strongest terms" the killing of a peacekeeper in the Central African Republic (CAR).
The Burundian soldier with the UN peacekeeping mission in the CAR was killed Thursday in an attack in the southeast of the country.
The members of the Security Council expressed their deepest condolences and sympathy to the family of the peacekeeper killed, as well as to Burundi and to the UN peacekeeping mission known as MINUSCA, the Security Council said in a press statement.
The members of the Security Council condemned in the strongest terms all attacks, provocations and incitement to violence against MINUSCA by armed groups and other perpetrators, the statement said.
The council members reiterated that attacks against peacekeepers may constitute war crimes and reminded all parties of their obligations under international humanitarian law.
They called on the CAR government to swiftly investigate this attack and bring the perpetrators to justice.
The council members reiterated their full support for MINUSCA and expressed their deep appreciation to the mission's troop- and police-contributing countries.
