MEXICO CITY, Feb. 16 (Xinhua) -- Police and experts are investigating a Friday night gun attack at a bar in Mexico's famed Caribbean resort of Cancun that left five people dead and five injured, a local prosecutor said Saturday.
According to preliminary investigations, four individuals opened fire with long shotguns and pistols on customers in the men's nightclub "La Kuka," located on the central avenue of Lopez Portillo, said a statement issued by the Quintana Roo prosecutor.
Investigators are gathering information from three people whom officials took to the prosecutor's office following the attack.
An image published by local media shows several injured men lying on the club's floor amid overturned tables and chairs.
The club is located in central Cancun, some 13 km from the hotel zone and the tourist resort's beaches.
In the past few years, Cancun, Mexico's main tourist destination, has registered a large number of violent incidents, which the Quintana Roo government has attributed to criminal groups fighting to control illegal drugs.
On Tuesday, the governor of Quintana Roo, Carlos Joaquin, announced a new strategy supported by more technology and improved policing to combat crime in the area.
