WASHINGTON, Feb. 27 (Xinhua) -- The Attorney General's Office of Washington D.C. has subpoenaed President Donald Trump's inaugural committee for documents relating to the spending of the 107 million U.S. dollars it raised to hold Trump's swearing-in, U.S. media said Wednesday.

The subpoena, dated Feb. 26, sought to determine "whether the committee's expenditures of its nonprofit funds were wasteful, mismanaged, and/or improperly provided private benefit, causing the committee to exceed or abuse its authority or act contrary to its nonprofit purpose," the New York Times quoted the document as saying.

The Trump inaugural committee was tasked with organizing events around the time of Trump's inauguration in January 2017, including a concert at the Lincoln Memorial, three inaugural balls and several candlelight dinners.

The Washington Attorney General's Office will be focusing on whether committee officials benefited from the group's spending.

The subpoena was the third of its kind against the inaugural committee, which is also being investigated by federal prosecutors from New York and the attorney general of New Jersey.

The New York Times reported that the Trump inaugural committee raised and spent at least twice as much as its predecessors, generating a level of scrutiny unseen in recent years.
